Friday evening was preview night, it went really well, with plenty of visitors. The show runs from 10am to 4pm on 17th June to 19th June at Bradford College School of Arts and Media.
My final project was centered around a series of letters from the Second World War:-
In 1942 a British serviceman stationed in India met a British
lady who had been born and brought up near Bombay, they began a letter
correspondence, which became the start of their long relationship. The letters are written in the language of
the time and show humour, compassion and romance talking of the times they
spent together and the joy they felt in each other’s company. 70 years later the letters were rediscovered
by the granddaughter of the couple and they became the inspiration for this
collection.
Vintage techniques were used to create a nostalgic feel with
a pinhole camera capturing blurry images and tatting techniques used to add a
further layer and create drama. The
photographs and the embroidered text, which fades in and out, create a sense of
memory, while the floral imagery produces a feeling of the exotic landscape in
which the story is set.
Embroidery,
jacquard weave and digital printing have been used to develop the fabrics,
which are intended for women’s fashion for Spring/Summer 2014 and are targeted
towards higher end high street stores.
The show will be packed up to go to London on the 19th ready for New Designers which will be held from 27th to 29th June at the Business Design Centre in Angel, Islington. See the website for more details: New Designers
It is a really exciting and daunting time, the start of a new phase for all of us. I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities that come along.
