Summer Show

Three years of work are now over, it has gone so quickly, and the summer show is up and running.

Friday evening was preview night, it went really well, with plenty of visitors.  The show runs from 10am to 4pm on 17th June to 19th June at Bradford College School of Arts and Media.

My final project was centered around a series of letters from the Second World War:-

In 1942 a British serviceman stationed in India met a British lady who had been born and brought up near Bombay, they began a letter correspondence, which became the start of their long relationship.  The letters are written in the language of the time and show humour, compassion and romance talking of the times they spent together and the joy they felt in each other’s company.  70 years later the letters were rediscovered by the granddaughter of the couple and they became the inspiration for this collection.

Vintage techniques were used to create a nostalgic feel with a pinhole camera capturing blurry images and tatting techniques used to add a further layer and create drama.  The photographs and the embroidered text, which fades in and out, create a sense of memory, while the floral imagery produces a feeling of the exotic landscape in which the story is set.

Embroidery, jacquard weave and digital printing have been used to develop the fabrics, which are intended for women’s fashion for Spring/Summer 2014 and are targeted towards higher end high street stores.

The show will be packed up to go to London on the 19th ready for New Designers which will be held from 27th to 29th June at the Business Design Centre in Angel, Islington.  See the website for more details: New Designers

It is a really exciting and daunting time, the start of a new phase for all of us.  I am looking forward to new challenges and opportunities that come along.

Dissertation

I have been working heavily on my dissertation this past week, which is now almost finished.  It has been such a long process putting it all together, over many months.  I have really enjoyed meeting people who have given their time to me to interview and it is quite liberating to think I am nearly finished.

The subject of my dissertation has been how the 'slow' movement has made an impact on the consumption of fashion in Britain.  It is amazing to find so many designers, independent stores and high street stores that are involved in cleaning up the fashion industry.  There is still a long way to go, but initiatives that are out there are making an impact.

My surprise has been how few consumers know about the ethical and environmental issues within the fashion industry.  Maybe less of a surprise is how few consumers know where to get these products and their assumptions of them, either that they are too expensive or are not as fashionable.

A brilliant book, which goes through all of these issues in an easy to read way is 'To Die For' by Lucy Siegle.

Here are a few links to fashion brands:
People Tree
Howies

and with many high street stores taking up ethical and sustainable practices with the use of organic cotton and fairtrade principles, see Marks and Spencer Plan A for a good example, it is becoming easier and easier to buy with a clear conscience.

Beginnings

Today is the start of my blog, this will include all things design and art related.  As a textile designer I like to look at what is going on in the arts and fashion industry.  I work with print, jacquard weave and embroidery and like to experiment with new techniques.

I work with old photographic techniques and have recently started exploring pinhole cameras, which I create with matchboxes.  This is a really exciting way of photographing as you never quite know what you are going to get, I enjoy this element of surprise.

My aims with this blog are to post images of my work and things I find inspiring, or are of interest to me.

My other interests include Slow Fashion and all elements of sustainable and ethical textile production.  I am interested to see how this is influencing designers and am keen to see how these influences are growing within the market.

I hope you enjoy reading, and I look forward to posting more soon.
